Andy and Claire Williams thought they’d never be able to take Karly and Mia on a holiday because of their complex needs but thanks to the Pied Piper Appeal, they were able to take them to the Calvert Trust, Exmoor.

For families with children with life-limiting conditions, it can be difficult to make memories by having a simple holiday.

For Andy and Claire, the dedicated parents spend their days and nights caring for two girls – one adopted, the other fostered – with very complex needs.

The Cheltenham couple never thought a trip away with their other daughter, Jenny, would be an option until the Pied Piper Appeal got involved enabling all five of them to have a trip to the Calvert Trust.

Andy, 48, had given up work in logistics at Formula 1 when he and his wife decided to give the girls a loving home. Claire, 47, has cared for adults with special needs her entire life and they decided that they wanted to help children too. There came a point when they knew these two special girls needed a home and they decided to look after them.

Now they have parental responsibility for Karly, 12, who has cerebral palsy, has no control over her limbs and is also non-verbal and epileptic. Mia, seven, is adopted by Andy and Claire, is oxygen-dependent with under-developed lungs, due to a life-limiting condition. Mia is also non-verbal and deaf.

“We were referred to the Pied Piper Appeal through the paediatrician. He asked us if we would enjoy a holiday,” said Andy. “It is so difficult to find beds with our children’s needs, it is near-on impossible.

Andy and Claire have brought back some fond and priceless memories from their seven-day break.

Andy said: “The people there were amazing. I cannot believe how much fun they had.”

Both Karly and Mia enjoyed all the activities on offer and there is nothing they couldn’t have a go at.

He said: “The instructor we had was so patient. They did so much. They had a go at rock climbing and abseiling and canoeing as well. It was full-on but to see their faces was just amazing.”

The holiday was also a chance to get to know other couples in the same situation.

Andy said: “There were ten of us that spent the weekend together. We got to know another couple from Wales, and we made friends and they understand the situation. It is like another support.”
